What a Spotify Canvas actually is

A Canvas is the short looping visual that plays behind a track in the Spotify app. It replaces the static cover art in the Now Playing view, and it follows the track when a listener shares it to Instagram Stories — so it travels further than the artwork does.

It is deliberately a small format. Spotify caps it at eight seconds, plays it silently under your audio, and loops it indefinitely. That means a Canvas is not a music video in miniature: it is a texture, a mood, a single held gesture that survives being watched fifty times.

What makes a Canvas work

Spotify publishes guidance for Canvas, and most of it comes down to remembering that the clip loops forever under music you did not write it for.

  • 1No talking, singing or rappingEight seconds will never line up with your lyrics, and a mouth moving out of sync is the fastest way to make a track feel cheap. Keep faces still or keep them out.
  • 2Avoid hard cuts and flashingRapid edits read as a glitch on loop, and intense flashing is an accessibility problem. One continuous movement beats four clever ones.
  • 3Keep the important part centredPhone screens vary and the edges get cropped. Anything that must be seen belongs away from the frame border.
  • 4Design for the loop, not the endingThe clip restarts the moment it ends. Slow drifts, rising smoke and gentle push-ins loop cleanly; anything with a punchline does not.

Visual styles that hold up on loop

Instrument close-up
Abstract texture
Studio gear
Object in motion

Abstract texture, instruments and lighting loop well because nothing in them needs to resolve. Faces and text do not — they invite the viewer to read, and eight seconds is never enough.

How to make a Spotify Canvas for your track

  1. Describe the visual

Write what you want to see — mood, subject, colour and camera movement. Or attach a cover image to animate it instead.

  2. Pick the platform preset

Choose Spotify Canvas and the length and aspect ratio are set to spec automatically. No need to remember the numbers.

  3. Generate and upload

Download the finished clip and upload it to your track in Spotify for Artists, or post it with your song on TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

Canvas figures follow Spotify’s published guidelines (3-8 seconds, vertical 9:16, 720-1080px tall). Clips here are generated without audio, which is what Canvas expects — add your song on the platform.

Questions

Can I use this to make a Spotify Canvas?

Yes — that is what the Canvas preset is for. Spotify asks for a 3-8 second vertical loop at 720-1080px tall, with no talking or singing in the footage. The Canvas preset produces exactly that, and clips are generated silently by design.

Why is there no sound in the video?

These clips are made to sit under your own music. Spotify Canvas is silent by specification, and on TikTok, Reels and Shorts you attach your track in the app. Generating silent footage also keeps the cost down.

How long can a clip be?

It depends on the model — from 4 to 15 seconds. Short-form platforms favour short clips, and Canvas is capped at 8 seconds, so the presets keep you inside the right range automatically.

What is the difference between this and the AI music video generator?

The AI music video generator builds a full-length video for an entire song. This tool makes a single short vertical clip for release assets and social posts. Use both: a long video for YouTube, short clips for Canvas and Shorts.

Why do the models cost different amounts?

Each model has a different cost to run, and the price shown reflects that. Within a tier the models are not a price ladder — they are good at different things, so pick by look rather than by cost.

Can I use the videos commercially?

Yes. You have commercial usage rights to the videos you generate, including on releases and social channels.
